[Karthik] : Born and brought up in India in the city of Madras, where I did my schooling and college. Did my masters in the UK in London. Started working in India in 1997 and came to the US in 1998. Joined Microsoft in 1999 and have been there ever since – Nov 29th 2014 is my 15 year anniversary at MSFT! Married with 2 kids, both boys, a 6 year old (Rithik) and a 2 year old (Riyaan). My wife Sangeetha recently started cross-fitting at the box and is as hooked as I am, which is great for me as she now gets what I see in it :-
[FUSE] What is your biggest life accomplishment and why?
[Karthik] : Following my passion when it was a relatively new field where I grew up, making it my profession, and getting to a place where I get to do what I truly love every single day of my life, without ever once feeling that I am working for a living.
[Fuse] On a Saturday night, where could we typically find you?
[Karthik] : Before kids, you would find my wife and me at a restaurant in downtown Bellevue and at the movies. With kids, it’s been “take it as it comes” and on their schedule!
[Fuse] What is your guilty pleasure/ favorite cheat meal?
[Karthik] : Any cold stone ice cream loaded with chocolate – the love it size (the like it just won’t do it for me)
[Fuse] What is your favorite healthy meal?
[Karthik] : Oatmeal and scrambled eggs
[Fuse] What are your Favorite sports teams?
[Karthik] : Been a while since I have followed any sports closely. Used to be a huge tennis junkie and my favorite players are Ivan Lendl and Serena Williams.
[Fuse] What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?
[Karthik] : Movies and Music…though I would know much about artists and tracks…just enjoy listening to anything upbeat and good.
[Fuse] Why did you start CrossFit?
[Karthik] : I needed a fitness program where I would not plateau. I have found this in CrossFit.
[Fuse] What did you think after your first WOD and/or after your first week?
[Karthik] : This is different than anything that I have done…If I stick to it, I will end up doing things that I never would have imagined I could physically, or would ever try on my own.
[Fuse] What is it about CrossFit and our box that keeps you coming back for more and more?
[Karthik] : Limitless variety with no plateaus.
[Fuse] What are some of the noticeable changes about yourself since starting CrossFit? Physical? Mental?
[Karthik] : Feel stronger physically and more alert & calm mentally.
[Fuse] You walk into Fuse without knowing what the WOD is…. What’s the movement you hope IS on the board, and what movement do you hope is NOT on the board?
[Karthik] : Is on the board : Burpees with pushups. Is NOT on the board : Squats with Barbell overhead.
[Fuse] What are your short term and long term CrossFit goals?
[Karthik} Short term: always-on healthy eating, 25 unbroken DUs, and 15 unbroken, unassisted Pull-ups. Long term: Snatch 90 pounds, Rope climb.
[Fuse] I tell people every week that “the hardest part of joining CrossFit is just walking through the door”. For all of the individual out there considering “walking through the door” for the first time, what do you have to say to them?
[Karthik] : It is the best thing that you can do for yourself – JUST DO IT!
