1.) She is incredibly easy to coach, highly motivated and one of the most encouraging athletes we have
2.) She is motivated, eager to learn, asks questions about how to work on skills, frequently comes in early or stays late to work on a skill and is always cheering on whoever is working out when she’s in the gym
3.) Everyone shows improvement, but people who build the community are the ones who stand out.
So who is Katie?
OUTSIDE The Box:
What is your Hometown or where did you grow up, Significant other, Kids, Siblings, Occupation, Where did you go to College, did you play any sports, ETC…?
I grew up in Redmond Washington! I’ve got 5 siblings, 2 sisters and 3 brothers, so you could say my childhood was pretty active. I’m currently a receptionist at Axia Home Loans in Downtown Bellevue, and I’ve got a CrossFitting boyfriend who likes to take the credit for getting me hooked on the sport. As far as education goes, I’m working on my AA degree at Bellevue College.
On a Saturday night, where could we typically find you?
I’d say you could either find me chillin’ with my friends around the Seattle area, or watching a film… I LOVE watching movies. Not in the theater, though. It has to be at home on a couch so I can fall asleep if I want to!
What is your guilty pleasure/ favorite cheat meal?
Fresh-baked, soft Chocolate Chip cookies. Or better yet, just the cookie dough.
What is your favorite healthy meal?
Chicken!!! There’s nothing better than some lemon-roasted chicken, potatoes, and nice side salad. Chicken Salad is also pretty great.
What are your Favorite sports teams?
Seahawks, of course! I’m also a die-hard Mariners fan. Hate all you want, their time will come!!
INSIDE the BOX
Why did you start?
I was close friends with a CrossFit athlete (who happened to go to regionals with her team this year!) and she planted the idea in my mind. That was almost three years ago. I had been working out on my own and the more bored I got, the more I thought about CrossFit. I didn’t have the guts to even walk into a box until my boyfriend told me to “just try one class”. Well, one class was all it took! I’m about 6 months in and I plan to keep CrossFitting for a looong time.
What did you think after your first WOD and/or after your first week?
I probably just thought I was going to die through my entire first WOD. I definitely remember thinking I wasn’t as fit as I thought I was, everyone doing CrossFit is insane, and that the baseline workout was the most fun, crazy workout I had ever done. (Little did I know that’s one of the more tame workouts)
What are some of the noticeable changes about yourself since starting CrossFit? Physical? Mental?
I feel like a lot more of a badass. 😉 I’m definitely more confidant in my abilities, with my body, personality, everything. It’s crazy how workout out can change your entire outlook!
You walk into Fuse without knowing what the WOD is…. What’s the movement you hope IS on the board, and what movement do you hope is NOT on the board?
I would hope that there’s power cleans, Russian twists, sit-ups, or, my new favorite, toes-to-bar. 🙂 I always dread doing more than like, 5 push-ups. Muscle-ups, just because I can’t do them yet. Rowing AND running in a WOD is always torture. But at the end of the day, as long as I get my WOD in, I’m a happy camper!
What are your short term and long term CrossFit goals
a. Short term: Free-standing handstands, handstand walks, push-ups, ring dips, and bar muscle-ups.
b. Long term: Ring muscle-ups! RX a heavy lifting WOD, add more weight to all my lifts. Also clean up my eating more, gain muscle weight, and eventually try out a competition or two.
I tell people every week that “the hardest part of joining CrossFit is just walking through the door”. For all of the individual out there considering “walking through the door” for the first time, what do you have to say to them?
Just try it once! There’s no strings attached and you’ve got nothing to lose.
The people and the workout will make you feel better than ever. CrossFit is a challenge like you’ve never experienced, but once you commit, your whole outlook on fitness and life will change for the better!
